I remember when you first held her
to shelter her from harm
And said “This is my gift to you”
As you placed her in my arms.
I saw the loss deep in your eyes
Your tears and inner pain
The ones you shed for her and me
like neverending rain.
The day you dressed her all in white
To leave the hospital with me
As you kissed her angel face goodbye
A mother’s love was seen.
You took time to heal the hurts
That were so hard to endure
Your tears dried with warmth and comfort
And were healed with love and time.
Weeks went by as you longed
To see her sweet face again
To sing her that lullabye song
That played constantly in your head.
You walked in the door and held her
So close to your loving heart
Holding her as if to nurse her
Softly kissing and embracing her.
You kissed her goodbye
Gave me a loving embrace
And smiled
As you walked away.
“You are the mother now”,
you said, with dignity and grace
Now blessing us to allow
our love to bond so free.
I taught her about the miracle of you
And how you gave her life
A special bond that shines even now
a love that shines so bright.
She looks like you
And acts like me
She loves so pure and true
Loving the mother in me and always loving the mother in you.
